Geographical Points

Lake Baikal
Location: south of the Russian region of Siberia

This record breaking lake holds twenty percent of the Earth’s fresh water – as much as all five of America’s Great Lakes combined. But, with a water temperature rarely rising above eight degrees Celsius it’s not as inviting as it looks. But that’s okay for the residents, the only freshwater seals in the world: the Baikal seals.

Some Interesting Facts

Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world with a maximum depth of 1,632m.

It is also the world's largest volume of fresh water 23,000 cubic km.

This means that one-fifth of all the fresh water in the world is located here at Lake Baikal.

Lake Baikal is 640km long and judging by its dimensions only it would be more of a sea than a lake.

Baikal is also the world's most ancient freshwater lake, it originated 20-25 million years ago.

It is home to many unique species of animals and plants including the freshwater seal.

Lake Baikal is one of the clearest and purest bodies of water. In a good day you could see 40 meters into the lake.

Dimensions of Lake Baikal: It is 636 km long, 79 km wide.

There are 27 islands in Lake Baikal, most of them being uninhabited.

Baikal Lake’s coastline measures 2100 kilometers (around 1300 miles).

More than 300 streams and rivers flow into Lake Baikal, but there is just one outlet, the Angara.

The water in the lake creates a mild microclimate around its shores.

More than half the species found in Lake Baikal are unique to this place.

One fifth of all the freshwater in the world is in this lake.

The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO)

The National Sample Survey Office

The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), now known as National Sample Survey Office. The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation was established in 1950, with the objective of obtaining comprehensive and continuing information relating to social, economic, demographic, industrial and agricultural statistics through sample surveys on countrywide basis. It has been, therefore, instrumental in developing a strong database that has helped the Central as well as State Governments in development planning and policy formulations.

The NSSO has four Divisions namely:
  • Survey Design & Research Division (SDRD)
  • Data Processing Division (DPD)
  • Field Operations Division (FOD)
  • Coordination & Publication Division (CPD)

  • Each of these Divisions, except the CPD, is headed by Additional Director General. All these four Divisions function under the guidance of Director-General & Chief Executive Officer (DG&CEO).

Survey Design & Research Division (SDRD):

SDRD located at Kolkata is responsible for planning of the survey, finalization of sample design, schedules, instructions and tabulation programme, report writing, etc.

    Data Processing Division (DPD)

DPD with its headquarters at Kolkata process the data collected through socio-economic surveys through its six Data Processing Centres across the country.

    Field Operations Division (FOD)

The Field Operations Division (FOD) is responsible for collection of data from the field on various surveys of the NSSO. The FOD with head quarters at New Delhi functions through a network of 6 Zonal Offices, 49 Regional Offices and 116 Sub-Regional Offices spread throughout the length and breadth of the country.

    Coordination & Publication Division (CPD)

CPD coordinates the activities of all the Divisions.

The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) functions under the overall direction of National Statistical Commission (NSC). The National Statistical Commission has the requisite independence and autonomy of decision making in the collection; processing and the publication of NSS data. The autonomy includes the choice of subjects or items on which data have to be collected in a given field of investigation or in a given period, the frequency with which the data on any item are to be collected, the preparatory or pilot work to be undertaken on different subjects, the sample design to be adopted, the tabulation to be prepared, the form in which the data are to be collected and processed and the analysis and publication of results.

Every year NSSO conducts not only large-scale sample surveys in the form of NSS Rounds covering a variety of socio-economic topics, but also other important surveys in the field of Industrial Statistics (Annual Survey of Industries), Agricultural Statistics and Retail Prices.

    El Nino

    What is El Nino?

El Nino, which literally means boy in Spanish.El Nino is an abnormal warming of surface ocean waters in the eastern tropical pacific cause climatic changes this climate pattern's oscillations cause extreme weather in many regions of the world and this El ninos tend to happen for every 3-7 years. EL Nino flows southward along the coasts of Ecuador and Peru, between January and March

The 1982-1983 El Nino Strongest El Nino in this century.

    Who recognized first?

El Nino was originally recognized by fisherman off the coast of South America as the appearance of unusually warm water in the Pacific ocean, occurring near the beginning of the year.

What are El Nino weather patterns?
  • Cooler and wetter weather in the southern United States
  • Cooler weather in northern Canada
  • Drier weather in the Pacific Northwest
  • Warmer weather in western Canada and southern Alaska
  • Wetter weather in southern California
  • General impacts of El Nino:
  • Drought in Africa and India
  • Drought in Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines
  • Heavy rains on islands of Pacific and the west coast of South America
  • Greater precipitation in SW United States
  • Warmer-than-normal winters in northern US and Canada
  • Weakening of Atlantic hurricanes
  • El Nino effect on India

Monsoon faithfully arrives at the shores of Kerala every year in the month of June. Its arrival is sometimes disrupted by a phenomena called El Nino which occurs in Eastern Pacific, near the shores of Peru. The ENSO is known to have a pronounced effect on the strength of SW Monsoon over India with the Monsoon being weak. Most of severe droughts in India have been associated with the El Nino events. This anomaly causes variability of the monsoons.when pressure is high over the Pacific Ocean, it tends to be low over the Indian Ocean from Australia to Africa. As pressures are inversely related to rainfall, it implies that low pressure over the Indian Ocean would result in a good monsoon.

    World Geography

How the Tilt of the earth's Axis is responsible for the seasons?

The Seasons on the Earth's are not caused by the differences in the distance from the sun.As the earth spins on its axis, producing night and day, it also moves about the sun in an elliptical orbit that requires about 365 1/4 days to complete. The earth's spin of axis is tilted with respect to its orbital plane this causes the Seasons. This tilting is what gives us the four seasons of the year - spring, summer, autumn (fall) and winter.

When the earth's axis points towards the sun, it is summer for that hemisphere. When the earth's axis points away, winter can be expected. Since the tilt of the axis is 23 1/2 degrees, the North Pole never points directly at the Sun but on the summer solstice it points as close as it can, and on the winter solstice as far as it can. Midway between these two times, in spring and autumn, the spin axis of the earth points 90 degrees away from the sun. This means that on this date, day and night have about the same length: 12 hours each, more or less.

Seasons Aren't Dictated by Closeness to Sun: Why our closeness to the sun does not dictate the seasons
