World Consumer Rights Day
World Consumer Rights Day is being observed to create awareness about consumer rights and consumer protection measures to ensure fair trade and business practices.
Observed for the first time on 15th March, 1983, World Consumer Rights Day commemorates the historic 1962 declaration by former US President John F. Kennedy of the four basic consumer rights of- right to safety, right to be informed, right to choose and the right to be heard.
The theme this year is, Consumer Justice Now. Several functions are being held across the country to raise awareness about consumer rights and duties among people.
Our correspondent reports that in 1986, Parliament enacted the Consumer Protection Act providing for the establishment of consumer councils to settle consumer disputes and related matters The government is taking all steps to further strengthen the consumer redressal process and the Consumer Protection Act is being reviewed to make it more effective.
The Department of Consumer Affairs is also exploring the possibility of producing tele-serials educating and empowering consumers of their rights and responsibilities.
Successful public campaigns,like Jago Grahak Jago, have achieved high recognition among consumers in creating awareness.
The National consumer helpline number 1800-11-4000 operates, addressing a multitude of problems arising in a consumer’s day-to-day dealings.
Consumer protection measures to eliminate unfair practices in a competitive business environment is key to making societies safer and fairer.
National Consumer helpline is a project of the Union ministry of Consumer Affairs , Operating from the University Of Delhi.The Project recognizes the need of consumers for a Telephone Helpline to deal with a multitude of problems arising in their day-to-day dealing with business and service providers.
